The biggest opportunities in technical sales don’t go to the person with the most technical credibility. They go to the person the client calls before the requirement is even written. That’s the trusted advisor position, and it’s where the larger, more strategic deals are won.
Trusted advisors are valued not because they know the most, but because they help the client think more clearly. They ask better questions than the competition. They are candid about trade-offs, including when their own solution is not the right fit. And they have a point of view about where the client’s industry is heading and what the client’s priorities should be.
At BLT, we believe there are three key behavioural shifts that develop technical sales professionals into trusted advisors:
Shift 1: From answering to asking
It’s often assumed that sales calls are where technical sellers should demonstrate their expertise, but this isn’t always the case. In a sales call, reaching for the answer too quickly risks signalling to the client that you don’t fully understand their world. The first shift is restraint: using structured questions to surface the client’s real priorities, constraints and decision criteria before recommending anything.
Shift 2: From technical detail to business consequence
The second shift is framing. It’s critical to consistently connect technical detail with commercial outcomes. This enables clients, particularly those who sit outside your area of specialism, to understand what your solution will deliver for their business, as well as the risks, costs and consequences of getting it wrong.
Shift 3: From agreeing to advising
Agreement is comfortable to give, but it’s not always what a client needs. When a client’s specification solves the wrong problem or their timeline ignores a risk, the most valuable thing a trusted advisor can do is push back, challenge assumptions constructively and be honest about trade-offs.
None of these shifts replace technical expertise. They sit on top of it. What they have in common is a change of vantage point: intentionally stepping back to see the bigger picture the client is operating in. Do that consistently and the relationship changes with it. You stop being consulted on problems and start being consulted on direction.
How we support the transition to Trusted Advisor at BLT
At Business Linked Teams, the trusted advisor transition sits at the heart of our work helping technical people sell, communicate and lead. Rather than a one-off course, we design blended learning journeys that combine focused workshops, live practice with real client scenarios, coaching and reinforcement through the BLT Sales Academy. This ensures the shift is embedded into day-to-day work rather than left to fade after a single event.
We customise everything to your world. The buying processes and commercial pressures of an engineering firm are not the same as those of a bank or a manufacturer, so the scenarios and language reflect your clients, not generic ones. And because we work internationally across many languages, globally distributed teams get the same programme delivered consistently while staying locally relevant.
The outcome isn’t memorised phrases. It’s behaviour change: technical people who lead with understanding, frame their expertise commercially, and get invited in early, where the biggest opportunities are won.
