In organisations where the seller is also a technical expert, such as an engineer, technologist or finance professional, there is a natural gravitational pull towards talking about the technical specifications of the product. It’s the thing they know best and are proudest of.
The difficulty is that features describe what something is, while buyers make decisions based on what something does for them, for example reduced operational risk, a more efficient process or a faster time to revenue. These are the terms in which budgets are justified and decisions are defended internally.
Solution Selling: The shift required of technical sellers
Solution selling reframes the conversation around the client’s outcome. It starts not with the offering, but with a rigorous understanding of the client’s situation: what they are trying to accomplish, what is currently getting in the way, what that costs them today, and what it would be worth to resolve.
Solution selling is the discipline of making an explicit link between what the client needs and the outcome that you provide. We believe that the practical skill at the heart of solution selling is translation. It means reframing each technical specification and answering the question: What does this mean for my client’s business?
- A faster processing time is a feature. The consequence is more orders fulfilled per shift or a service-level commitment your client can now make to its own customers.
- A robust design is a feature. The consequence is less warranty exposure and less downtime.
Our solution selling approach at BLT
We advocate a structured approach to solution selling, and we build it around the way technical people actually think.
Our programmes give sellers a repeatable framework for moving from technical diagnosis to quantified value: how to run a disciplined discovery conversation, how to translate findings into a commercial case, and how to present that case to your audience.
And because behaviour change does not happen in a day, we deliver this through blended learning journeys, including workshops, applied practice, coaching and ongoing reinforcement through the BLT Sales Academy. These are designed to embed the discipline and drive continuous improvement rather than create a short-lived uplift.
For us, the measure of success is straightforward: conversations that start with the client’s outcome rather than the seller’s product.
